2010:
Another
fantastic New Zealand Horse and Wine Tour concluded today with a wonderful
time had by all.
The five night six day tour has become a fixture on our annual roster and is
proving to be highly popular among our tour guests. Our accommodation was
again first rate with the teams’ at the Sebel Suites (Auckland) and
Novotel Tainui (Hamilton) providing excellent service.
This year the tour featured visits to major farms Cambridge Stud, Windsor
Park Stud, Rich Hills Stud, The Oaks Stud, Waikato Stud and Westbury Stud.
We just missed seeing the arrival of So You Think’s full brother at Windsor
Park Stud. The group got a closer look at mum Triassic less than 24 hours
before the arrival of a lovely colt by boom sire High Chaparral.
The 2010 tour group had its usual strong Queensland flavour, but this year
featured a strong contingent from Victoria. The well respected Maxine
Glennan joined us and had a wonderful time. Maxine is a committee member
of Victorian Racehorse Owners Association (TROA) and has been a highly
successful racehorse owner over many decades. One of her best gallopers in
recent years was Zabeel’s daughter Bazelle, who collected the 2005 Group 1
Auckland Cup at Ellerslie. Well known ABC sports commentator Drew
Morphett joined the group with wife Caz, who operates a high class
spelling facility at Pakenham called “Cloverdale” which servicing top
trainers Peter Moody, Mick Price and Robbie Griffiths.
One of the highlights of the tour was a day trip to the beautiful Waiheke
Island. With picture perfect weather, the group enjoyed a three course lunch
to die for at the exquisite Mudbrick Vineyard, which was proceeded by
wine tasting at three vineyards including the beautiful Te Whau.
Prior to departing to the Waikato, the group took in racing action at the
Auckland Racing Club at Ellerslie with lunch at the Chairmans Club.
Whilst the winners were less than plentiful, there was certainly plenty of
Christmas cheer. Santa Claus made Sande Stewart’s day ! The racing
highlight of the day was the soft win by Salvatore in the Group 3 feature.
The team at New Zealand Bloodstock welcomed the group for a tour and lunch
at the picturesque Karaka sales complex. Gatton auctioneer Bill Hallas
was seen to advantage in the Auctioneers box. Thanks to James Jennings
for his usual insightful commentary during our visit to NZB.
