2011 New Zealand Horse & Wine Tour Review

Written by Ontrack Tour Host Grant Morgan

Monday 12 December, 2011: The wonders of New Zealand and its fabulous breeding industry never let down our annual tour group. And of course neither do those fabulous NZ Sav blancs !

I know I say it each year, but my favourite destination on my annual calendar is New Zealand for our Horse and Wine Tour.

Our visit to Ellerslie races was again a lovely way to spend a lazy Auckland Saturday afternoon. Mixed fortunes on the punt, with the highlight of the days racing action a great win by Veyron in the feature event at Ellerslie.

I sing the praises of Waiheke Island each year. We had a mixed day for weather on our visit, but this certainly didn't interfere with a wonderful day of wine tasting and dining.

Melbourne owner Geoff McCormack was keen to meet with Savabeel. Geoff is a part owner of Savabeel's promising son Brambles, a member of the Peter Moody team.

But the star of the show as far as stallions go (and photo opportunities) is the great Zabeel. Chris Forrestor was just one of our guests to get a snap for the record books with this great old boy!

As is always the case, Sir Patrick Hogan was gracious with his time and the group certainly enjoyed his wonderful insight into the Sir Tristram story.

This year we added a new stop on our tour in the beautiful Cambridge nursery of Trelawney Stud. Our hosts Brent and Cherry Taylor left a wonderful impression on the tour group over a cold glass of wine whilst viewing the latest foal arrivals in their fabulous hospitality area.

Following the Trelawney visit, Canberra racing and breeding enthusiast Mandy Metcalf was left plotting her next share investment on what will hopefully be star filly!

During our final day, the group familiarised themselves with the Karaka sales complex with our host James Jennings from New Zealand bloodstock.  With several first time NZ visitors in the group, I'm certain many will be back to try and grab a slice of an NZ bred at future Karaka sales.
