Barlinnie Provides Instant Results for New Owners

Saturday 20 December, 2008: Former Melbourne Galloper Barlinnie delivered fast rewards for his new owners by winning the $200,000 Listed Doomben Stakes (1350m) at just his second Queensland start today.

Now prepared at the Gold Coast by in form trainer Trevor Bailey, Barlinnie was previously trained at Caulfield by Peter Moody.

After winning 6 of his first 12 starts, Barlinnie was purchased earlier this year by Grant Morgan of Ontrack Thoroughbreds.

Barlinnie is now owned by an eclectic group comprising of 11 owners, several of which are enjoying their first foray into racehorse ownership.

Ontrack Thoroughbreds Managing Director Grant Morgan believes that the trading of tried horses is highly beneficial to stimulating the interest of new owners.

“I think trading of this nature on tried horses is a great stimulus for new owners in our industry,” said Morgan.

“If we are to attract and retain new owners the industry, surely suitable tried horses can better generate growth and interest.”

“Yearlings often take so long to mature, whereas tried horses can get to the races quickly if they are selected and placed well.”

Barlinnie’s stakes success continued Morgan’s good run with tried horses over the past few seasons.

He was also instrumental in the purchase of other strong stakes performers Fabiarna and Rumbird, both of which were tried horses.

Barlinnie will now contest the third and final leg of the Summer Triple Crown series at Doomben next Saturday.

He steps up in distance to contest the $200,000 Listed Bernborough Handicap (1615m) also at Doomben.

Following the Bernborough, Barlinnie will head for a short spell before being aimed up at some richer prizes 2009 Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

They will include the $300,000 Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast and the $500,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2020m) at Doomben.

Barlinnie’s victory also capped of a highly successful day for the Trevor Bailey stable.

Bailey saddled up two impressive winners at the Gold Coast which made it three wins for the day, from as many starters.
