Friday 5 August, 2011: Smart young
sprinter Flying Minstrel narrowly missed a new Ipswich 1000m course record
in a dazzling display of speed.
Stopping the clock at 57 seconds, Flying Minstrel was just outside the
course record of 56.7 which was set 24 years earlier by flying filly Lynn’s
Love.
The victory smashed the previous 18 year class record held by Hell’s County.
The win takes Flying Minstrel’s career record to 4 wins from 7 starts for
Gold Coast trainer Trevor Bailey.
One of the finest physical examples of promising young sire Jet Spur, Flying
Minstrel is out of the former handy Royal Troubadour racemare Ode To Thee.
Flying Minstrel was selected and purchased out of the paddock as an unbroken
yearling by Grant Morgan of Ontrack Thoroughbreds.
“I only saw one QTIS yearling as good as him in his year. That horse turned
out to be Excellantes who defeated him last start,” said Grant Morgan.
“Flying Minstrel is such a powerful horse; he just has muscle on muscle.
They don’t go much faster than what he did today.
“It wasn’t a rock hard track either, so the time is ultra impressive given
how long those records have stood for.”
