Sound first up win for Flying Minstrel

Saturday 9 July, 2011: Promising Jet Spur three year-old Flying Minstrel returned to the races today with an impressive first up win at his home track on the Gold Coast.

Gelded after failing at his last two starts whilst enroute to the Magic Millions Three Year-Old trophy, Flying Minstrel put aside the troubles of his last campaign to strike form over 900m.

Flying Minstrel ($2.20 fav) was full of running on the line to score a comfortable 2.5 len win on the line over Commandare ($4.40) with Deb’s Choice ($7) a further ¾ of a length away in third place.

Flying Minstrel carved out an impressive time of 51.03 for the 900m Class 2 journey, coming home his final 600m in 32.64.

Flying Minstrel was selected and purchased by Grant Morgan of Ontrack Thoroughbreds out of the paddock as an unbroken yearling.

Today’s win extends his record to 3 wins from 5 starts, with prizemoney earnings of $102,000.

Trainer Trevor Bailey was pleased man following the performance.

“It’s good to get him back, there was a little bit of pressure to get him back wher we hope he could be,” Bailey told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

“When we went to Wyong it was a very hot day and the track was wet, I don’t think he is a wet track horse and he has also been gelded.

Bailey said his trackwork had been superb leading up to his first up assignment.

“He’s a brilliant trackworker, you can put him down with an Open Handicap Horse and hell put two or three lengths on then,” Bailey continued.

A city return is now planned for Flying Minstrel who is likely to back up at Doomben on Saturday 16 July in a QTIS 3yo Hcp (1110m), with star apprentice Tim Bell booked to ride with his valuable 2kg claim.

Flying Minstrel’s victory brought up a winning double for Bailey after tough three year-old Devinardi continued to repay his owners with a soft victory in the Class 4 Hcp (1400m).

Devinardi has now earned $274,300 from twenty starts, with today’s victory his fourth career win for owners Paul and Beverley Hope.

The winning double moves Bailey to outright third in the Gold Coast trainers’ premiership this season.
