Steve Hawkins Joins GCTC Board

Monday 10 November 2008: LOCAL race caller and Gold Coast Turf Club favourite, Steve Hawkins is set to call a whole lot more in future.

The race broadcaster was today announced as the ninth Board Member of the Club, replacing long time Director Peter Lawlor MP.

Calling at the track for over nine years, Hawkins’ involvement at the Gold Coast is a natural progression, “I have a deep passion for the GCTC and believe I have something to contribute to its future,” said Steve.

Not only a well known racing identity at the Club and with Radio TAB, Steve and wife Kate, operate Hawkins Media Solutions, a media and marketing business in Queensland.

Gold Coast Turf Club Chairman, Hoss Heinrich believes Mr Hawkins is a welcomed addition to the Board.

“The Club is pleased to have Steve as a Director and his wealth of experience in the racing industry will be a strong asset for the Gold Coast.

Steve’s a talented caller, owner, breeder and business man. His presence on the Board is held in high regard and we anticipate his contribution to be significant,” said Mr Heinrich.

Hawkins bid for board began in 2007 when he accepted nomination and missed out by a narrow margin.

With the recent resignation of Peter Lawlor a position on the Board became available to the next in line.

Mr Lawlor’s career as a Director of the Club spanned over 15 years however came to an end just a few weeks ago due to electoral commitments.

The State Member for Southport and longest-serving Board Member has seen the Club develop over the years.

Turf Club CEO, John Cameron praised the efforts of Mr Lawlor and his dedication to the course.

“Peter has played a vital role at the Club and will be missed by Board and staff.” Mr Cameron said

“We know that it’s not goodbye and hope to see him as a regular visitor of the track,” he said.

Recent renovations and Board elections sees the Club looking to the future in the coming weeks.
