Trevor Bailey Getting The Edge at the Gold Coast

Monday 26 January, 2009: In form Queensland trainer Trevor Bailey continued his outstanding form by recording a personal best of four winners on the eight race Gold Coast card on Saturday.

The four winners catapulted Trevor Bailey into second place in the Gold Coast Trainers Premiership.

With 15 winners at the Gold Coast this season, Trevor Bailey is now just one win behind leader Gillian Heinrich on 16 wins.

Trevor Bailey’s father and multi premiership winning trainer Alan Bailey sits in third place with 12 wins.

Nearing the halfway point of the racing season, Bailey has prepared 29 winners across South East Queensland from a 30 horse team.

This is in comparison to his tally of 34 wins last season.

“This is only my second full season of training here since coming back from Singapore,” said Trevor Bailey.

“It’s taken a while to get the formula right, now we are really starting to get the results.”

“I’m looking forward to the second half of the season as we have a number of good young horses coming through the stable.”

“We’ve been able to win 3 stakes races in the past 12 months with Fabiarna, Perfect Feeling & Barlinnie.”

“As our younger horses start to mature, hopefully we can be even more competitive in the better races,” said Trevor Bailey.

On Saturday, Bailey opened his winning account in race three with an exciting victory by promising three year-old Competitive Edge.

The Canny Lad gelding gave early tearaway Fireman a big start straightening before unleashing a powerful burst to record a dominant win.

Ridden by stable jockey Terry Treichel, Competitive Edge (1.50 fav) was bred and part owned by Basil Nolan of prominent Darling Downs nursery Raheen Stud.

“Terry said that he didn’t really handle the going 100%, so that adds plenty of merit to the win.”

Treichel continued his outstanding form by spearing home former Southern gallopers Cannlight and Dardan to victories in the next two events, providing him with a treble.

Also by Canny Lad, Cannlight (13.00) was having her first start for Bailey after being earlier prepared by Warwick Farm trainer Guy Walter.

“She’s been working well, but it was hard to get a line on her until she had a local run.”

Former Lee Freedman galloper Dardan (2.60 fav) maintained an outstanding record at his new home track for owner John Anderson.

Dardan has now won 3 of his 7 starts at the Gold Coast.

“For a horse that was struggling to win in Victoria, he’s paying his way here and goes very well over 1200m at home.”

The final leg of the parlay came with a clever ride by Kelly Purdy aboard five year-old mare Little Imp (4.40).

“Kelly really suited her today and things went our way in running.”

The stable came within a half length of five wins when Al Hussar (41.00) was second behind the Alan Bailey prepared Age of Heroes in the final event.

“If I have to get beaten by someone, I’m happy it’s dad.”
